Victoria, BC- The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Victoria Royals’ forward Alex Forsberg has been named the CHL Player of the Week.

Forsberg, a native of Waldheim, SK recorded seven points (2g-5a) in the Royals two game sweep of the Portland Winterhawks this past weekend.

The 1995-born veteran becomes the third player (Brandon Magee – 2014-15, Alex Gogolev - 2012-2013) in Victoria Royals’ team history to receive the CHL Player of the Week award. The WHL also announced Forsberg as the WHL Player of the Week yesterday. 

The 5-11, 192 lb Forsberg is tied for the WHL lead in scoring with seven points (2g-5a) and also leads the league in assists.

Forsberg is in his final season in the WHL and has notched 32 points (15g-17a) in 32 career games with the Royals.

Victoria, BC- The Western Hockey League (WHL) today announced that Victoria Royals’ forward Alex Forsberg has been named the WHL Player of the week.

Forsberg, a native of Waldheim, SK recorded seven points (2g-5a) in the Royals two game sweep of the Portland Winterhawks this past weekend and is tied for first in league scoring.

The 5-11, 192 lb forward becomes the fifth player (Brandon Magee – 2014-15, Travis Brown - 2014-15, Joe Hicketts - 2014-15 and Alex Gogolev - 2012-2013) in Victoria Royals team history to receive the WHL Player of the Week award.

The 1995-born veteran is in his second season with the Royals after being acquired from the Saskatoon Blades at last year’s trade deadline. In 32 games with Victoria, Forsberg has notched 15 goals and 17 assists.

Forsberg is in his fifth and final season in the WHL and has tallied 152 points (58g-94a) in a 199 career games split between the Royals, Blades and Prince George Cougars.

Victoria will continue their six game home stand with a back-to-back home series against Kamloops on Friday and Saturday night. Puck drop for both games are scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Victoria scores four second period goals to defeat Portland 6-5.

Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals and Portland Winterhawks exploded for six markers in the middle frame as the homeside swept the two-game home series with a 6-5 victory.

Victoria forward Alex Forsberg recorded a goal and two assists for three of his four points (2g-2a) in the second period. The Royals trailed twice before Vladimir Bobylev scored two tallies with an additional marker from Ralph Jarratt to give the home team their first lead of the night. Portland’s Alex Schoenborn and Victoria’s Forsberg exchanged goals late in the second to end the frame.

The Royals’ game-winner was scored by Regan Nagy 13 seconds into the third period. The Winterhawks other goals were scored by Skyler McKenzie, Paul Bittner, Caleb Jones and Colton Veloso.

Royals’ netminder Coleman Vollrath stopped 27 of 32 shots he faced. Winterhawks goaltender Michael Bullion turned away 22 of 28 shots directed at him.

On the powerplay Victoria went 1/6=16.7%, while Portland was 0/3=0.0% with the extra attacker.

Victoria topples Portland 4-1 in front of 6,627 fans.

Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals scored the first four goals of the game to defeat the Portland Winterhawks 4-1 in front of a boisterous crowd of 6,627 on Friday night to begin the 2015-16 WHL Regular Season.

Tonight's contest marked the first time in Royals’ history that the team had begun the regular season on home ice.

Victoria’s Jack Walker opened the scoring with 1.3 seconds remaining in the opening frame off a feed from Alex Forsberg, who was later named the game’s first star. Forsberg recorded three assists in the Royals’ win. Victoria’s Vladimir Bobylev scored the game winning goal 2:19 into the middle frame. The Royals’ Dante Hannoun and Ryan Peckford would add insurance markers later in the period. Peckford, who skated in his first WHL regular season game, tallied his first career marker in the league. Portland’s lone goal came from Carl Ericson in the final period.

Victoria started 20-year old goaltender Coleman Vollrath in net who stopped 21 of the 22 shots that he faced in the win. The Winterhawks opted for Michael Bullion in net who turned aside 25 of the 29 shots directed his way.

The Royals went 1/7=14.3%. Portland was unable to score on the powerplay and went 0/6=0.0%.

Victoria will continue their six-game homestand tomorrow night against the Winterhawks. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

ROYALS TO HONOUR GRANT FUHR AND TYLER STAHL
Victoria WHL alumni to receive Professional & Scholastic Alumni Achievement Awards.

Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals are proud to announce that former Victoria WHL alumni Grant Fuhr and Tyler Stahl will be the recipients of the club’s Professional and Scholastic Alumni Achievement Awards as part of the WHL’s 50th season.

The Royals will present Fuhr and Stahl with the awards during the club’s Turn Back the Clock Night on Saturday, November 14th versus the Seattle Thunderbirds.

GRANT FUHR

Fuhr will receive the Professional Alumni Achievement Award for his numerous accomplishments during his 20-year career in the NHL.

The 5-11, 184 lb netminder played two seasons (1979-81) in the WHL for the Victoria Cougars where he helped the team win the 1981 WHL Championship. In 102 contests with Victoria, Fuhr collected a record of 78-21-1 to go along with a 2.84 goals against average, a 0.909 save percentage and six shutouts.

The Spruce Grove, AB native was selected by the Edmonton Oilers eighth overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft and went on to play for the Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Buffalo Sabres, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and Calgary Flames, where he recorded 403 wins in 868 games.

During his professional career, Fuhr won five Stanley Cups (Edmonton – 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988 & 1990) two Canada Cup gold medals (1984 & 1987) a World Championship silver medal (1989), and a Vezina trophy as the league’s top goaltender (1988). He was also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003.


TYLER STAHL

Stahl will be recognized with the Scholastic Alumni Achievement Award for his educational success at Olds College where he became a certified Agricultural Heavy Equipment Technician.  He is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Business Management Degree at Athabasca University, while working in his trade.

The product of Drumheller, AB played four seasons with the Victoria/Chilliwack franchise (2009-13) and tallied five goals, 25 assists and 465 penalty minutes in 188 games.

The 6-2, 215 lb defender captained the Royals during his last season with the club (2012-13) where he notched a career high 12 points (4g-8) to go along with 87 minutes in penalties in 41 contests.

Stahl was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the sixth round, 167th overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
