Recap: SC 2 - VIC 1 OT

Austin Carroll forced the extra frame, but the visiting Swift Current Broncos (4-4) earned the extra point in a 2-1 overtime victory over the Victoria Royals (1-4-1-0) Saturday night.

Swift's netminder Landon Bow made 36 saves, while 17 year old NHL Draft prospect Glenn Gawdin notched the winner, in their only meeting of the season.

“I don’t like the end result, but you can’t be disappointed with our effort.  That’s the hardest we’ve played all year…I thought tonight, we played a real solid game.” – Head Coach Dave Lowry

The victory gave the Broncos back to back wins while playing four games in five nights on their BC Division road swing.  The Royals were coming off five days in between games, and looking to get back into the win column after falling to the Giants at the end of a 3 in 3.

After Flames draft pick Coda Gordon opened the scoring by pouncing on a rebound in the first, Victoria came out hard in the middle frame.  They out hit Swift 11-5 (unofficially) and out shot the Broncos 15-6 in the second but came away empty handed.

The Royals efforts finally paid off in the third, but were unable to beat Bow a second time.  They did pick up a much needed point, early in the season.

“I liked the way we competed, the fact that defended, we blocked shots.  I liked how after we gave up the first goal we stayed with how we had to play…a lot of positives, and you build on that.”  Said Lowry

With a full compliment of defenseman, and three veterans missing up front with suspended Brandon Magee, and injured Axel Blomquist and Brandon Fushimi out, defenseman Jack Walker was moved back to forward.  He was instrumental in setting up Carroll’s tying goal.

“I give him credit, he hasn’t practiced at forward since last year and he came out and probably had his best game of the year.” Said Lowry on Jack Walker.

Carroll had 9 shots on net, while Walker snapped 6 on the second star of the game, Bow.

“I think we definitely could’ve won it in regulation tonight, but overtime we both battled hard, but the bounces just went their way…” said Walker on the outcome.

The Royals buckled down defensively limiting chances, while Coleman Vollrath kicked out 24 of 26 pucks.

Victoria shut down the 2nd best power play, limiting Swift Current to just two chances, however the Broncos also voided both Royals man advantages.

The non-conference match up was physical, and saw two fights.  Victoria’s Chaz Reddekopp took on Dakota Odgers, and heavy weight Keegan Kanzig went toe to toe with Brett Lernout.

Monday the Royals entertain the Winterhawks in their first meeting since falling in five in a spirited playoff series last spring, fresh in the mind of Walker.

“We’ve got some unfinished business against Portland (1-5-0-1), they’ve got a slow start to the season too, so it’s a big game for us.”
