Preview: Portland at Victoria, Monday Oct. 6th, 2014

Monday night, the Victoria Royals (1-4-1-0) entertain the Portland Winterhawks (1-5-0-1).  It’s their first encounter since the Royals fell in 5 games to the Winterhawks in the second round of last springs playoffs.  Portland went on to fall in seven to Edmonton in the WHL Final.

Victoria’s Brandon Magee was suspended for 12 games in the final contest.

The Royals went 3-1 against the 4 time defending Western Conference Champs,Winterhawks during the regular season last year.

Victoria is coming off a 2-1 overtime home loss to Swift Current Saturday, as Austin Carroll scored to force the extra inning while the Royals pumped 37 shots onto Landon Bow, picking up a point in the process.

The Royals were without the injured Axel Blomqvist (upper, indefinite), Brandon Fushimi (lower, 2-3 weeks) and Victoria’s leading point producer from last season, the suspended Brandon Magee.

Portland just picked up their first victory, after going winless in six to start the season.

Winterhawks forward Alex Schoenborn was the overtime hero, as they edged the Silvertips 3-2 in Everett Saturday.  The win is the first of new Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Jamie Kompon’s WHL career. Brendan Burke earned his first win of the season in net with 26 saves, while Chase De Leo and Tyson Predinchuk also had a goal for the Winterhawks.

Portland was again without Nic Petan, who however, was reassigned to the Winterhawks Sunday leaving no skaters away at NHL camps.

Portland features 9 NHL drafted players, Petan - WPG (signed), DeLeo – WPG, Iverson – NYR, Schoeborn – SJ, Turgeon – DET, Bjorkstrand - CBJ (signed), Cederholm - VAN (signed), Heinrich – WASH, Burke – ARZ.

Three ‘Hawks are on the ‘Ones To Watch’ List.  Forward Paul Bittner with an ‘A’ rating, and defenseman Nick Heid Keoni Texeira with a ‘C’ Rating.  Royals forward Tyler Soy and defenseman Chaz Reddekopp also were ‘C’ rated.

It’s the last home game for Victoria before embarking on a 6 game Central Division road trip in Alberta.
