VAN 3 - VIC 0 (Exhibition)

The visiting Vancouver Giants shut out the Victoria Royals 3-0 Thursday night in preseason action.

The Giants scored once each period while outshooting the Royals 29-17.

“I don’t think we worked nearly hard enough tonight, I don’t think we worked nearly smart enough…” said head coach Dave Lowry,

“In saying that, it’s a young group.  It’s all about learning - and we won’t make that mistake again.”

Victoria was unable to convert on 6 power play chances while Vancouver went 1 for 3.

Ryan Kubic earned the shutout for the Giants including stoning Tyler Soy on a breakaway.  The G-men got goals from Thomas Foster, Jakob Stukel, and Joel Hamilton.

The Royals have 6 player away at NHL camps.

Brandon Magee, Austin Carroll (drafted) and Keegan Kanzig (signed) are off to Penticton for the Young Stars Classic on behalf of Calgary, with Axel Blomqvist (signed) for Winnipeg.  Travis Brown to Ottawa’s Rookie Tournament in London, and Joe Hicketts to the Traverse City Prospects Tournament on behalf of Detroit.

Victoria concludes the preseason Saturday night in Kelowna, and open the regular season on the road in Kamloops Sept. 19th.  Single game tickets for the regular season go on sale Friday (12th) at 9:30 a.m.

ROYALS BLANKED BY GIANTS

Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals dropped a 3-0 result to the Vancouver Giants on Thursday evening at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The game marked the lone WHL Pre-Season contest at home for the Royals.

Victoria went with a mixture of 11 regulars and eight rookies in their lineup. Veteran goaltender Coleman Vollrath made his second start of the pre-season for Victoria, while the Giants countered with Ryan Kubic between the pipes.

Victoria scratched 20-year-olds Travis Brown, Brandon Magee, and Austin Carroll along with regulars Keegan Kanzig, Joe Hicketts and Axel Blomqvist who were all away attending NHL Rookie camps.

Vancouver opened the scoring in the first period with a power play marker from center Thomas Foster. The Giants extended their lead in the middle frame on a goal from Jakob Stukel. Forward Joel Hamilton tallied the final goal for Vancouver in the third period.

Vollrath went the distance for the Royals turning away 26 of 29 shots. Giants’ netminder Kubic stopped all 17 shots he faced for the shutout.

Victoria went 0/5=0.0% on the power play, while Vancouver went 1/3=33.3%.

The Royals now travel to Kelowna to conclude their pre-season schedule with a contest against the Rockets on Saturday, September 13th at Prospera Place. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
