Recap: VIC 3 - EVTT 2

The Royals celebrate a 3-2 win against the Silvertips
Ben Walker #1 Star
Ben Walker scored the game winning goal with 35.2 seconds left and Patrik Polivka made 32 saves as the visiting Victoria Royals (26-13-0-2, 54pts) beat the Everett Silvertips 3-2 New Years Eve.

“I felt it was a real gutsy performance tonight.  We lose (Brandon) Magee at the end of the first period, and playing one body down already, others had to elevate their game.” – Royals Head Coach Dave Lowry

It was the first meeting of the season, and the back half of the two game set goes at 3pm New Years Day on the Island.

Victoria sits 3rd in the West, and pulls 4 points up on Everett, a team that’s been near the top of the Conference all year long.

“They’re a different team this year, they’re a bigger team, play a heavier game and finish all their checks, they make you pay a price.” Said Lowry, “We talked about it before the game, it was going to be a big boys game out there, and it was going to be a heavy game and I thought our guys stood up to it.”

The Royals are now riding a 5 game winning streak, a feat they’ve accomplished twice already this season.  They have points in 7 straight (6-0-0-1) as their road record improves to (13-5-0-1).

Victoria never trailed and held period leads of 1-0, and 2-1.

Taylor Crunk (4th) scored on the power play in the first, and Steven Hodges (7th) pulled them ahead again in the second, on the only even strength goal of the game and regained the momentum.

“In the second we had a real big kill and came back on the next shift and scored (Hodges).  Those are momentum generators and that’s what the games all about.”

After Everett scored their 2nd power play goal to even the game at 2 in the third, Victoria got a late man advantage and Walker buried his 17th.

“We maintained our patience, but we also didn’t want to sit back…we got some big saves and cashed in on our opportunities as they presented themselves.”

The Royals were outshot 34-21 and relied on the sharp play of netminder Patrik Polivka who earned his 17th win of the season.  His counterpart, Austin Lotz stopped 3 breakaways, but allowed 3 goals on 21 shots for the loss.

Special teams played a crucial role in the game as Victoria went 2 for 5, and Everett 2 for 4.

…we needed to make sure we gave ourselves a chance in that battle (special teams).  Yes we gave up a couple goals, but our power play scored a big one at the end.”

Steven Hodges had a goal and an assist, and Axel Blomqvist extended his point streak to 7 games 12pts (6g 6a) with a helper on the game winner, but they lost their linemate Brandon Magee in the first to a lower body injury (day to day).

Victoria is already without the injured Joe Hicketts (upper 6-7 weeks), forward Logan Nelson (upper 1-2 weeks), and forward Braden Oleksyn (upper 4-5 weeks).

Everett played their last 3 games without the services of Joshua Winquist who’s 3rd in league scoring (59pts) and without 28 point man Manraj Hayer (upper).

Both clubs are missing players due to tournaments.  At the U-17’s are Royals Tyler Soy and Chaz Reddekopp, Kevin Davis and Noah Juulsen for the Silvertips.  Sharks draft pick Mirco Mueller is at the World Juniors for Team Switzerland.
