Preview: Lethbridge at Victoria, Friday October 11th

The Victoria Royals (4-5) look for back to back home wins as they entertain the Lethbridge Hurricanes (1-5-0-1) for a pair of games Friday and Saturday.

It’s the first of 3 meetings this season, last year the Royals went 0-2 against the ‘Canes.

Victoria is coming off a 2-1 victory over Tri City Sunday afternoon, kicking off a 5 game homestand, and have a chance to get back to a .500 record.  They begin a 3 game in 4 day stretch, part of 4 in 6 at home.

Lethbridge has dropped 3 in a row all on their 3 game homestand, most recently a 5-2 loss to Kootenay Wednesday.

The Hurricanes only had 1 day in between games to travel and get ready for the contest on the Island.  After the two games against the Royals, Lethbridge plays in Kamloops and Kelowna Monday and Wednesday before returning to Alberta.

The Hurricanes sit 12th in the East and have 3 points this year in 7 games, their only win this season came on the road against the Oil Kings.

Lethbridge traded 18-year-old defenceman Adam Henry Wednesday to the Seattle Thunderbirds in exchange for 18-year-old defenceman Griffin Foulk (6’1, 196 pound).

The Hurricanes also have a new bench boss this season named Drake Berehowsky, a former journey man defenseman in the NHL, including a stop in Vancouver.

Lethbridge’s 18 year old forward 6’6 Axel Blomqvist from Sweden has 4 points in 4 games (2g 2a) and recently signed with the Winnipeg Jets to a three-year, two-way, entry level contract after a free agent try out.

Victoria welcomed a 4 day in between game break after playing 9 games – the most in the WHL at the time.  The Royals penalty kill has only allowed 1 goal against over their last 5 games (20/21) good for 5th best in the league.

Victoria will be without forwards Steven Hodges (Lower, 3 weeks) and Luke Harrison, serving a one game suspension for a fight at the start of third period versus Tri-City on October 6.  Justin Gutierrez of Tri City was also handed a one game suspension and both clubs were fined $250.

After the two game set against Lethbridge, Victoria faces Prince George Monday afternoon and Wednesday before heading out on a two game US road swing.
