|The Royals celebrate a 3-2 Shoot Out win in Kelowna.|
Both Logan Nelson and Brandon Magee scored in the shoot out, while Patrik Polivka stopped both Rocket shooters.
“We had a goalie come in and give us an opportunity to win off the bench.” Said Head Coach Dave Lowry.
The Royals who were heavily outshot 41-21 on the night, got timely saves from Polivka in the third, also while killing a penalty in overtime. Polivka stopped all 28 shots he faced. Keith Hamilton playing in his hometown split the duties, stopping 11 of 13.
“Although tonight wasn’t the way we had drawn it up, I liked the fact that after the first period we got back to doing some of the little things right. We pushed the pace in the third, and found a way to tie it up…” said Lowry.
The win spoiled netminder Jackson Whistle's debut in a Rockets uniform after being acquired from the Giants.
The Royals take both games from the Rockets in the preseason, winning 4-1 the night earlier.
Zach Franko and Tyson Baillie got the home team up by a pair after 20 minutes. Their was a fight between Royals defenseman Keegan Kanzig and the Rockets Tyrell Goulbourne, earning them each game misconducts.
In the second, the Royals Jordan Fransoo would score an unassisted marker late with 46.8 seconds left to cut the lead in half.
Westbank product Luke Harrison would even the score in the third period beating Whistle low blocker on the short side. Overtime solved nothing and a shoot out was needed.
The Royals preseason record now sits at 2-2.
When asked about reducing roster numbers, Lowry said, “We’ll evaluate, and obviously have some tough decisions to make, and that’s a good thing, but sometimes it’s tough when you get to this point.”
Both clubs were unable to score with the man advantage, the Royals with 3 opportunities, the Rockets with 4. “I thought our penalty killing was decent, but the power play we didn’t generate any opportunities, 5 on 5 we spent too much time in our own end and made a lot of mistakes.”
Next they face the Giants twice, this Friday in Ladner and play their last pre-season game Saturday at the Save On Foods Memorial Centre.
